Ekta Kapoor is working on a sequel to Udta Punjab (2016), the crime drama that highlighted Punjab’s drug crisis. The project is still in its early stages, but reports suggest that filmmaker Aakash Kaushik has been brought in to write and direct. However, the makers have not officially confirmed anything yet.
There is also buzz that Shahid Kapoor might return as the lead. While discussions are still in the early phase, sources say Ekta Kapoor is eager to bring him back. A final decision will be made after the script is finalized.
Aakash Kaushik, known for writing Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 and Housefull 4, will take over as the director of Udta Punjab 2. The original film was directed by Abhishek Chaubey, but he is not part of the sequel due to his commitments to other projects. Unlike the first movie, this one won’t continue the same story but will again focus on Punjab’s drug problem. Reports suggest that this time, the film will take a deeper and more investigative approach to the issue.
The movie is expected to go into production next year, and fans are excited for more updates. Ekta Kapoor has a history of making sequels like Ragini MMS 2, LSD 2, and Ek Villain Returns, so this project aligns with her filmmaking style. Apart from Udta Punjab 2, she is also reportedly working on Dream Girl 3 and a sequel to Veere Di Wedding.
Meanwhile, The Dirty Picture 2 and A Flying Jatt 2 were also planned, but they haven’t moved forward yet. Though nothing has been confirmed, they are still under consideration.
Fans are now waiting to see if Udta Punjab 2 will match the hard-hitting impact of its first part.
