Deepika Padukone Says India Has Been Robbed Of Oscars Many Times

Deepika Padukone is sharing glimpses of her life lately on social media. In a recent video, the actress, who was one of the presenters at the Oscars 2023, shared her thoughts on India at the Academy Awards. Acclaimed films All We Imagine As Light and Laapataa Ladies made waves globally in the past year. As the films did not make the Oscars shortlist, Deepika feels India has been “robbed” of Oscars over the years.

In a video shared on her Instagram handle, Deepika Padukone can be seen getting her makeup done. When asked which Oscar win felt personal to her, the Pathaan actress reacted to Adrien Brody’s win for his performance in The Brutalist. “Yeah, I’m very happy for Adrien Brody.” She further shared her disappointment with Indian movies losing out at the Academy Awards. “India has been robbed of the Oscars many times. Many, many deserving movies, I feel, just get snubbed. Whether it’s movies or talent,” she said.

Recalling the emotional moment when RRR won the Oscar for Best Original Song for Naatu Naatu, Deepika shared, “I remember being in the audience, and when they announced RRR, I got emotional. RRR! Outside of being an Indian, I have really nothing to do with that movie, but that was a huge, huge moment. That felt very, very personal. With all of that.”

Deepika Padukone presented Naatu Naatu at the Oscars 2023. The song was performed on stage amidst loud cheers. Describing the historic moment, Deepika shared that the track is the first song from an Indian production to be nominated at the Academy Awards. Composer and singer MM Keeravani went on to win the Oscar for the song.
