The first woman IPS officer, Kiran Bedi, paved the way for many women when she joined forces in 1972. Breaking the gender stereotype, Kiran became one of the most fearless officers in the history of the Indian Police Service. A former tennis player, Kiran also served as the 24th Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry.
Kiran started her career as an Assistant Superintendent of Police and later became an IPS officer. During her service, Kiran brought a significant reduction in crime against women and also launched a campaign against drug abuse. In 2003, Kiran became the first Indian and first woman to be appointed head of the United Nations Police Advisor in the United Nations Department of Peace Operations. She served the nation for 35 years and then took voluntary retirement in 2007.
