L2: Empuraan Box Office Collection: Mohanlalâs Film Opens Strong On Day 1

The highly anticipated L2: Empuraan released in theatres yesterday. Prithviraj Sukumaran directs and stars in the Malayalam-language action thriller alongside Mohanlal, Abhimanyu Singh and more. It is the sequel to the 2019 film Lucifer. The box office numbers from Empuraan’s first day are out and it has been a successful opening.

Here’s a breakdown of L2: Empuraan’s performance at the box office

As per Sacnilk.com, L2: Empuraan earned an estimated Rs 22 crore at the domestic box office. A major chunk of the viewership is reportedly from the original Malayalam version. It earned Rs 19.45 crore. The Telugu version of the film earned Rs 1.2 crore on the first day. The Tamil version garnered nearly Rs 80 lakh. Meanwhile, the Hindi and Kannada versions earned Rs 50 lakh and Rs 5 lakh, respectively. This makes the film one of the highest openers in the Malayalam industry. Mohanlal’s own Marakkar has held the title of the highest box office opener up until now. The film had earned Rs 20 crore worldwide. With the film bagging Rs 20 crore in the domestic markets alone, Empuraan is estimated to go up to Rs 50 crore globally.

About L2: Empuraan

The film picks up after the events of the first instalment, Lucifer. The plot revolves around the infamous Khureshi Ab’raam. It further expands on the film’s universe, bringing in new characters, including a powerful villain. Towards the climax, the makers confirmed a third instalment. The next part will be called L3: The Beginning.

L2: Empuraan Review

An excerpt from our review of the film reads, “L2: Empuraan is more of a cautionary tale against the saffronisation of our secular society than an action film. While the action scenes are imaginatively framed, the 180-minute length needed to be curtailed. There’s too much gap between these high-octane moments, especially in the first half, leaving the film to coast on Mohanlal’s swag.”
