Vicky Kaushal’s latest release Chhaava is one of the biggest hits in Indian cinema. At one point of time, the film gave Allu Arjun-starrer Pushpa 2 The Rule a run for its money at the box office. However, unlike Pushpa 2 that was able to strike the box office across all film industries, Chhaava couldn’t replicate its success story beyond Maharashtra.
Vicky Kaushal’s latest release Chhaava (released on February 14, 2025) went on to become a blockbuster. The Laxman Utekar directorial was one of the biggest hits in Indian cinema this year. The historical drama struck a chord with the audiences so much that at one point of time many predicted the film to take over Allu Arjun-starrer Pushpa 2 The Rule in terms of collections at the box office.
Chhaava got off to a brilliant start at the ticket window and the positive reviews, word of mouth helped the film to take giant strides at the box office. The historical drama, released 45 days ago, is set to conclude its theatrical run in a few weeks, having amassed a box office collection of Rs 600 crore. However, it falls short of the staggering success of Pushpa 2, which remains the biggest hit in both Bollywood as well as across India, with an unprecedented Rs 1000 plus crore in Hindi cinema alone.
Chhaava narrates the tale of Sambhaji Maharaj, son of Chhatrapati Shivaji, and his battles against Aurangzeb, while Pushpa 2 revolves around red sandalwood smuggling and the mafia surrounding it. Despite Chhava’s historical significance and Vicky Kaushal’s commendable performance, the film couldn’t replicate its Maharashtra success nationwide. With just a few weeks left in its theatrical run, Chhaava has little chance of surpassing Pushpa 2’s record. Although overtaking the latter is tough, the film has been a resounding success in recent times. The comparisons for the collections between Pushpa 2 and Chhaava were inevitable because both the films were supposed to release on the same date – December 5, 2024. But Chhaava makers backed off to accommodate and let Pushpa 2 enjoy a solo release at the theaters. Moreover, Rashmika Mandanna was the leading lady in both the films making the comparisons all the more inevitable. And during the Pushpa 2 success meet, Allu Arjun expressed his gratitude and thanked Chhaava filmmakers for being supportive and accommodative.
