Shatrughan Sinha, one of the most outspoken stars of Bollywood, has often been candid about his once-strained relationship with fellow legend Amitabh Bachchan. In a past interview, Shatrughan Sinha revisited the turbulent dynamics that once defined their association, shedding light on how time, experience and personal growth helped in healing the old wounds.
Describing the nature of their rift, Shatrughan Sinha acknowledged that clashes between them were partly self-inflicted and partly fueled by outside influences. He spoke of how fame, ego and the heady intoxication of stardom can often cloud judgment. He admitted that there were moments when both he and Amitabh Bachchan let emotions override reason but with the passage of time, perspective changed. Maturity allowed both the actors to reassess their past behaviour and move beyond bitterness. Shatrughan Sinha noted that while misunderstandings once drove a wedge between them, today they share a strong sense of mutual respect and camaraderie.
Shatrughan added that in regard to Amitabh, he feels sorry and thinks that Big B must be feeling the same. In the present times, they both are good friends and have respect for each other. What’s more, Shatrughan Sinha also stated that Amitabh may be senior to him in terms of age but in acting, he is a little junior.
In his memoir Anything But Khamosh, Shatrughan Sinha had gone into greater detail about their rivalry. He recalled that at the peak of their careers, tensions often surfaced on set — particularly when audiences’ reactions to Shatrughan Sinha’s performances appeared to overshadow that of Amitabh Bachchan. He believed this discomfort led to his exclusion from certain projects, despite his popularity and talent.
Their professional relationship reached a tipping point during the making of Kaala Patthar in the year 1979. Though they appeared together in several successful films like Dostana, Shaan and Naseeb, the unease remained palpable. Eventually, Shatrughan Sinha began stepping away from films that featured both the stars, even returning advance payments when necessary to avoid further conflict.
Beyond the screen, the distance between them extended into personal interactions as well. Shatrughan Sinha recounted how he would often find himself left out — whether it was the simple act of not being offered a seat beside Amitabh Bachchan or being denied the shared comfort of an umbrella during shoots. Even when traveling to the same destination, they would take separate cars, with Amitabh Bachchan maintaining a distance that Shatrughan Sinha found perplexing, especially since he harbored no animosity himself.
Looking back now, Shatrughan Sinha speaks not with resentment but with reflection. He sees their past rivalry as a chapter of professional friction that eventually gave way to understanding. Today, they may not be close confidants but they stand on a foundation of mutual regard, having journeyed from competition to reconciliation — two stalwarts who have weathered the storms of stardom and come out with grace.
