Mohanlal’s Drishyam 3, one of the most awaited Indian films in recent years, is officially headed to theatres worldwide on April 2. The makers made the announcement on Wednesday by unveiling a motion poster carrying the line “The past never stays silent”, hinting that the third instalment will once again deal with the lingering consequences of Georgekutty’s actions.
A franchise that redefined the moral thriller
The Drishyam franchise began in 2013 with the story of Georgekutty, a small-town cable television operator whose quiet life spirals out of control after his family is pushed into committing a crime. What followed was a nerve-racking moral thriller in which Georgekutty outwits the police and the system through sheer planning and an encyclopaedic knowledge of cinema.
The second part, Drishyam 2, released in 2021, shifted the narrative years ahead, showing how the family continues to live under the shadow of the unresolved case. The police are still on their trail; the wounds remain unhealed, but Georgekutty once again manages to stay a step ahead. The ending left viewers unsettled, suggesting that while justice may have been delayed, it was never completely defeated.
Over the years, Drishyam has become one of the most widely adapted franchises in Indian cinema. Besides Malayalam, the film has been remade in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and Kannada, and even in Chinese and Sinhalese. The Hindi version starring Ajay Devgn turned into a massive box office success and introduced the moral conundrum of the original to a much wider audience.
The team that brings Georgekutty back
For the third part, director Jeethu Joseph returns to the helm, continuing the collaboration that has defined the franchise. Mohanlal is back as Georgekutty, with Meena, Ansiba Hassan and Esther Anil reprising their roles as his wife and daughters. Murali Gopy and KB Ganesh Kumar also return, bringing back characters that play a crucial role in the investigation surrounding the case.
On the technical front, Drishyam 3 retains much of the core team from the second film. Satheesh Kurup handles the cinematography; Vinayakh is in charge of editing, and Anil Johnson once again composes the music. The film is produced by Antony Perumbavoor under the Aashirvad Cinemas banner, with Pen Studios and Panorama Studios presenting the project.
While details about the plot are being kept tightly under wraps, the tagline on the motion poster strongly suggests that the secrets Georgekutty buried so meticulously are far from forgotten. The franchise has always thrived on its exploration of guilt, memory and the grey areas between right and wrong, and the third installment is expected to push those themes even further.
Adding to the scale of the franchise, the Hindi adaptation of Drishyam 3, headlined by Ajay Devgn, has already been announced for an October 2, 2026 release, indicating that Georgekutty’s story is set to once again travel across languages and audiences.
With the release date now locked, the countdown officially begins for a film that promises to test how long a man can outrun his own past.
