Bhumi Pednekar opens up on taking a break in 2025

Ahead of her return to the screen with Prime Video’s crime drama Daldal, Bhumi Pednekar has spoken openly about a rare pause in her otherwise relentless career. In a candid conversation with The Hollywood Reporter India, the actor reflected on burnout, public scrutiny and the quiet reset that helped her reconnect with her craft.

After spending nearly a decade moving from one project to the next, Pednekar said she consciously chose to step away from acting in 2025. The constant demands of transforming into new characters had begun to take a toll, both mentally and physically. She admitted that the pace left little room to process experiences or even pause to reflect, something she eventually realised was affecting her work.

The strain was amplified by the mixed response to her Netflix series The Royals, where she starred opposite Ishaan Khatter. While the show went on to secure a second season, Bhumi’s performance drew sharp criticism online. Addressing the trolling, she shared that excessive noise can leave an artist emotionally numb. However, she also acknowledged that not all feedback was dismissible, and she made a conscious effort to separate meaningful criticism from unnecessary negativity.

Choosing to rebuild herself, Bhumi stayed away from film sets after June last year, even turning down projects along the way. She described the break as one of the healthiest decisions she has made. During this time, she focused on living rather than performing. She spent her time reading, watching films, and even enrolling in a course at Harvard to regain perspective and emotional depth.

At the heart of her decision was a deeper fear: creative stagnation. Bhumi confessed that she felt she had run out of lived experiences to bring authenticity to her roles. Confronting the possibility of mediocrity, she chose self-awareness over denial, trusting her instincts to recalibrate.

Now, as Daldal gears up for release, Bhumi says she feels sharper, more grounded and creatively recharged. With a courtroom drama set to begin filming soon, she is ready to embrace the next chapter. Her goal remains unchanged, to surprise audiences and continually push herself, this time with renewed clarity and purpose.
