Last month at the Golden Globes, stars such as Ariana Grande and Mark Ruffalo were seen wearing pins like “ICE Out” and “Be Good” as a striking statement against controversial immigration enforcement policies. This trend continued at the 68th Annual Grammy Awards in Los Angeles, where several high-profile artistes used their visibility to push the conversation forward.
The death of 37-year-old ICU nurse Alex Pretti at the hands of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Border Patrol agents in Minneapolis sparked widespread protests and calls for accountability. People renewed their demands to defund or reform agencies like U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Border Patrol.
At the Grammys, prominent artistes wore “ICE OUT” pins on the red carpet as a visible symbol of solidarity. Among those spotted wearing the pins were Justin Bieber, Hailey Bieber, Billie Eilish, Olivia Rodrigo, Kehlani, Joni Mitchell, Jason Isbell, Margo Price, and Amy Allen, among others.
When asked about her choice to make a statement, R&B star Kehlani didn’t hold back. She said, “Together, we’re stronger in numbers, [and must] to speak against all the injustice going on in the world right now. I hope everybody’s inspired to join together as a community of artists and speak out against what’s going on. I really wanted to say f*** ICE… We’re too powerful of a group to all be in the room at the same time and not make some kind of statement in OUR country.”
Joni Mitchell’s appearance was particularly notable.
As she walked the stage to accept the Best Historical Album award, she too was seen wearing an “ICE OUT” pin.
