Kamal Haasanâs âLead on Gandhiâ Video Reclaims the Mahatmaâs Moral Urgency

On the solemn occasion of Mahatma Gandhi’s death anniversary, actor and parliamentarian Kamal Haasan unveiled a seven-minute short documentary titled Lead on Gandhi, presented alongside Gandhi’s grandson Gopalkrishna Gandhi. The film is not a historical recap. It is a meditation on consequence, conscience and continuity, asking what Gandhi’s assassination still means in a world struggling with the same fault lines of hate, fear and untruth.

Opening with the shadows of 20th-century tyranny, the documentary glides from the rise of oppressive regimes like Benito Mussolini to the devastation of two world wars, before returning to Gandhi as a moral counterpoint. The pivot is stark: the Mahatma’s assassination by Nathuram Godse is framed not as an endpoint but as a warning bell that still rings. The film’s visual language is restrained yet evocative, blending archival footage with contemporary imagery to underline how cycles of violence repeat when values erode.

Crucially, the documentary weaves in select visuals from Haasan’s 2000 film Hey Ram, a controversial, introspective work that grappled with Partition trauma, radicalisation and moral conflict. By repurposing those frames, Lead on Gandhi draws a thematic bridge between cinema and civic conscience, reminding viewers that art can provoke empathy and accountability when politics falters.

“He was not killed by three bullets”

In his address, Gopalkrishna Gandhi delivered the documentary’s most piercing metaphor: “He was not killed by three bullets.” He explained that the bullets symbolised hate, fear and untruth, and insisted that Gandhi had, in fact, stopped them. The appeal was not to mourn but to act. To carry forward that resistance in everyday choices, institutions and conversations. His words lent the film a philosophical spine, transforming remembrance into resolve.

Haasan’s involvement, both as a public figure and a filmmaker, amplifies the message. His long-standing engagement with social themes lends credibility to a project that could have otherwise felt ceremonial. Instead, Lead on Gandhi arrives as a compact manifesto, urging audiences to see Gandhi not as a relic but as a living challenge.

A statesman-artist in motion

On the professional front, Haasan continues to straddle cinema and public life with rare intensity. He was last seen in Thug Life, directed by Mani Ratnam. Up next is a high-octane action film, tentatively titled KH 237, which marks the directorial debut of celebrated stunt duo Anbariv. As a producer, Haasan is also backing Rajinikanth’s next with Cibi Chakravarthy, currently known as Thalaivar 173.

Yet, amid these marquee projects, Lead on Gandhi stands apart. It is intimate, urgent and unflinching, a reminder that legacy is not inherited but practiced. In seven minutes, Haasan reframes a national tragedy as a call to moral leadership. The question he leaves us with is simple: will we lead, or will we look away?
