Rajkumar Hirani Reveals Plan for 4â“5 Minute AI Short Film Calls Tech âœa Great Toolâ

Veteran filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani is exploring new creative frontiers by planning a short film using artificial intelligence, and he’s optimistic about what the technology can bring to storytelling. In a recent interview, Hirani said he wants to make a 4–5 minute AI-assisted short that embraces the potential of the tools available today.

Hirani, known for directing blockbusters like 3 Idiots, PK and Sanju, made it clear that he doesn’t see AI as something to be feared. Instead, he described it as “a great tool” that can help filmmakers experiment with fresh ideas. “It isn’t going to replace the soul of cinema,” he said, reinforcing the idea that creativity still lies with the storyteller.

The filmmaker’s interest in AI comes at a time when the Indian film industry is wrestling with how to integrate rapidly evolving technology into production, writing and post-production workflows. While some in the industry have raised concerns about authenticity and originality, Hirani’s viewpoint leans toward collaboration between human insight and machine capability.

Speaking about the planned AI short, he said he wants to use the technology to enhance, not overshadow, the core narrative. The intention, he explained, is to explore possibilities and learn what AI can genuinely contribute, rather than attempting to create a finished product that looks like a full feature.

Hirani’s comments have drawn attention not just because of his stature in Bollywood but also due to the broader implications for the creative community. As studios, writers and directors consider how to work with AI responsibly, voices like Hirani’s offer a perspective focused on innovation rather than disruption.

Whether this AI project becomes a trendsetter or simply an experiment, it underscores a growing curiosity among established creators about the role technology can play in future storytelling.
