Ram Gopal Varma Says Dhurandhar 2 Has The Potential To Change The Game For Indian Cinema

Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma is known for his bold and unfiltered opinions, and his latest take on the upcoming film Dhurandhar 2 is no exception. Taking to his social media handle on Wednesday, he heaped massive praise on the spy thriller, which stars Ranveer Singh in the lead and is directed by Aditya Dhar. With the film just three weeks away from its release, he has called it a potential turning point for mainstream Indian cinema.

Writing on X, Varma described the sequel as an asteroid that has the power to end the film industry’s dinosaur era. He specifically targeted the common trend of superstar-led, big-budget masala films, suggesting that Dhurandhar 2 offers something far more substantial.

Varma expressed his belief that the film could permanently change the landscape of the industry. He wrote, “Dhurandhar 2 is an ASTEROID which might end the DINOSAUR era. Dhurandhar 2 has high chances of completely and permanently obliterating the pan India south films movement by establishing a brand new benchmark with ultra realistic making, genuine character depths etc that actually engage the audience’s brain while still delivering a raw visceral impact.

The director also mentioned that once audiences experience this new standard of storytelling, their appetites will change, leaving them wanting more than the usual run off the mill content. He wrote, “Once audiences taste this new standard, every film currently under production in the previous masala style can become instantly endangered.

Varma did not hold back in advising fellow producers and directors to reinvent themselves. He mentioned that those banking on formula-driven content such as “mass + vfx + scale + gravity defying stunts” will face an uphill task. He predicted that producers who bet their entire empires on the previous formula might face empty theatres and career ending losses because audience tastes are converting to international standards.

Varma also took aim at the culture of mindless hero worship. He said that superstars who rely solely on their god like statuses will stand exposed when compared to highly effective characters who grow to be heroes in the context of the story rather than already being hailed as heroes from frame one.

Scheduled for release on March 19, Dhurandhar 2 is set to clash with Yash’s Toxic. After the first Dhurandhar crossed the Rs 1,000 crore mark, expectations are sky-high. Varma concluded his thoughts by writing, “The goal post has been changed and so if the direction of the kick does not change, it might not only break the leg, but it might lose the limb.”
