Actor R Parthiban Apologizes for Caste Remarks at Ustaad Bhagat Singh Event

Days after mentioning his caste identity at the pre-release event of the Pawan Kalyan-starrer Ustaad Bhagat Singh, prominent South Indian actor R Parthiban issued an apology for what he termed a ‘slip of the tongue.’ He clarified his stance, stating a “dislike for those who celebrate caste as a badge of honour.” He further wrote, “I give you my word that this will never happen again, even by mistake. Once more, I offer my heartfelt apologies to everyone who was hurt by my words. Please put this behind you and continue to encourage me as you always have.”

Controversy brewed

Parthiban, who portrays a villainous politician in the Ugadi release, mentioned his caste background, ostensibly to highlight his Telugu ethnic heritage. He also intended to convey that his social background aligns with that of the film’s hero, Pawan Kalyan (who also serves as the Deputy Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh). While his remarks did not provoke significant reaction in the Telugu States, a considerable controversy quickly emerged in Tamil Nadu.

The Season of Apologies

In recent months alone, at least four to five movie celebrities have found themselves issuing apologies for their public statements. Bollywood actor Ranveer Singh, for instance, apologized for his mimicry of Rishab Shetty in Kantara, facing threats of police complaints. Veteran Telugu actor Rajendra Prasad, while praising a yesteryear Telugu matinee idol, inadvertently “insulted” the legendary Tamil cinema icon, MG Ramachandran. Following objections from a section of the Tamil film industry, Rajendra Prasad expressed his sincere regret. In Telugu cinema, speeches that draw criticism are increasingly becoming commonplace. Sivaji, a prominent character artist and antagonist, was summoned by the Telangana State Women Commission for making objectionable remarks about the attire of actresses at events. R Parthiban himself previously courted controversy after making remarks about Trisha Krishnan at an awards function. After the actress herself flagged the unwarranted remarks, the senior actor duly apologized.
