Kapoor & Sons has completed 10 years since its release today. Directed by Shakun Batra, the film starred Fawad Khan, Alia Bhatt and Sidharth Malhotra in key roles. The family drama follows two estranged brothers who return home after their grandfather suffers a cardiac arrest, only to confront long-buried tensions, secrets, and emotional fractures within their dysfunctional family. Over the years, the film has been widely appreciated for its nuanced writing, layered performances, and honest portrayal of modern family dynamics.
Marking the milestone, Sidharth Malhotra reflected on the film and his character, Arjun.
He said, “When I first read the script of Kapoor & Sons, I remember finishing it with tears in my eyes. It felt so real- like stepping into a warm, chaotic Punjabi family where every character had a heartbeat. Playing Arjun was special for me because he was layered, vulnerable and carrying so much inside him.”
The actor continued, “Ten years later, the biggest reward is still hearing people talk about the film, the scenes and the family dynamics as they’ve lived with these characters themselves. That kind of love is rare, and I feel grateful we got to bring that story to life.”
Meanwhile, talking about the film, Shakun Batra recently shared that there was a two-year gap between when the film was written and when it got made.
Talking to Hindustan Times, he said, “There was a two-year gap between when the film was written and when it got made. A lot of actors turned it down in the beginning. Actors weren’t comfortable playing homosexuals back then and at one point I thought I need to move on, I’ll never get to make the film. Fawad loved the script and called me to ask ‘Is homosexuality a whisper or a shout?’ I told him it’s a whisper and he was on board. That’s the only conversation we had, that homosexuality would be presented in a subtle manner, without saying it out loud.”
Kapoor & Sons also starred Rishi Kapoor, Ratna Pathak Shah, Rajat Kapoor, Anahita Uberoi and Riya Vij, among others.
