Ustaad Bhagat Singh, released in theatres for Ugadi on March 19, started witnessing a rapid fall in its box-office appeal by Saturday. The film got nearly pummelled by the Dhurandhar 2 or Dhurandhar : The Revenge’s juggernaut not only in Hyderabad but also in other prominent markets in the Telugu States. The Pawan Kalyan-starring action entertainer’s worldwide Gross Box Office Collections (GBOC) on Saturday were at Rs 70.80 Cr.
Bollywood’s challenge
By the afternoon of Saturday, as the Telugu version of Dhurandhar 2 got released, Ustaad Bhagat Singh received a huge setback. The film, produced by Mythri Movie Makers, co-stars Sreeleela and Raashii Khanna. R Parthiban plays the chief antagonist, a CM-aspirant who takes the help of terrorists to create political chaos in Telangana. The punchy plotline, however, got upended by routine treatment. The over-reliance of Pawan Kalyan’s stardom and swagger did the film in.
Director’s defence
In a special interaction with fans on X Spaces, Harish Shankar defended some of his screenplay choices, including making the hero utter a punchline thrice. He also stated that it had always been his urge to showcase his artistic edge, which is why he used an Ilaiyaraaja classic melody for a hero-centric scene. The remixing of Ey Manase from Toli Prema (1998) was also a conscious choice to add soul to the romantic track, he implied.

Meanwhile, Megastar Chiranjeevi has watched Ustaad Bhagat Singh with his family. “He loved every moment of the film and appreciated the efforts of the entire team. Don’t miss his reaction for Vaana Vaana Velluvaaye & EE Manase songs,” the makers wrote on X, sharing a video of the Mana Shankara Vara Prasad Garu actor’s reactions. Vaana Vaana Velluvaaye, a Chirnajeevi duet, is used in UBS in a comedy stretch meant to make fun of Pawan Kalyan’s lack of interest in dances. The scene also shows him dancing to a Mahesh Babu song.
