Sivakarthikeyan Says âplay Till 60â Dhoni Says âIâll Tryâ and Chepauk Loses It

There are cricket events and then there are Chennai Super Kings evenings at Chepauk, where reality blurs into something far more cinematic. On March 22, fans of Chennai Super Kings got exactly that kind of night as MS Dhoni once again found himself at the centre of a moment that felt equal parts celebration and spectacle.

When fandom meets folklore at Chepauk

The occasion was a fan interaction ahead of the upcoming Indian Premier League 2026 season, with the full squad in attendance. But it was actor Sivakarthikeyan who set the tone, turning what could have been a routine event into an emotional tribute to the man who has come to embody CSK.

Calling the franchise more than just a cricket team, Sivakarthikeyan struck a chord instantly. “The IPL may be entertainment, but CSK is an emotion,” he said, a line that landed like a chorus inside a stadium that has lived that truth for over a decade.

He painted a vivid picture of Chepauk’s unmatched energy, recalling how the roar that greets Dhoni is not just loud, but legendary. “I live in ECR, about 25 kilometres from here, but when MSD enters the stadium, I can hear that sound all the way,” he added, drawing cheers that proved his point in real time.

From Mufasa to Simba, and a team in transition

Beyond the nostalgia, the evening also leaned into what lies ahead. Sivakarthikeyan spoke about Dhoni not just as a cricketer, but as a leader whose influence extends far beyond the pitch. Meeting him in person for the first time, the actor admitted to being overwhelmed.

“I’ve seen you only on television or from the stands. Meeting you in person for the first time makes me nervous. Like so many others, I admire not just your cricket but also your leadership,” he said.

Looking to the future, he threw his weight behind CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, framing the transition in a pop culture metaphor that instantly clicked with the audience. Referring to Dhoni as Mufasa and Gaikwad as Simba, he expressed confidence that the young skipper would carry forward the legacy with the guidance of his predecessor and the unwavering backing of CSK’s fanbase.

The actor also welcomed Sanju Samson to the setup, calling him a “blockbuster addition” and highlighting the strong cultural ties between Tamil Nadu and Kerala, something that has often reflected in the team’s wide appeal.

“It is on the way down… but I will try”

Of course, the loudest cheers of the night were reserved for a question that refuses to go away. Retirement.

Sivakarthikeyan, voicing what every CSK fan secretly hopes, urged Dhoni to ignore the chatter entirely. “We expect the same answer every year, sir. You can play till you turn 60,” he said, sending the crowd into a frenzy.

Dhoni, now 44, responded in the only way he knows how, with calm, clarity and a touch of humour that has become his trademark.

“It is very difficult,” he admitted, before adding, “It is on the way down, not on the way up. But I will try.”

It was a line that carried both honesty and hope. No grand declarations, no dramatic hints. Just Dhoni being Dhoni, grounded yet quietly reassuring.

As CSK gear up for IPL 2026, the question of how long he will continue remains unanswered. But if this night at Chepauk proved anything, it is this: as long as Dhoni walks out in yellow, the noise will only get louder, the emotion only deeper and the story far from over.
