Tovino Thomasâ Pallichattambi Release Postponed after Censor Delay

The release of Tovino Thomas’ upcoming film Pallichattambi has been postponed from April 10 to April 15, aligning with the Vishu festival window. The last-minute shift comes after a delay in securing the censor certificate, reportedly due to the election code of conduct currently in place in Kerala.

Pallichattambi pushed amid election-related delay

The makers confirmed the development, stating that the film will now aim to capitalise on the festive audience turnout. While the postponement may come as a minor setback, the Vishu corridor is often considered a lucrative period for Malayalam cinema, potentially working in the film’s favour.

Directed by Dijo Jose Antony, Pallichattambi is positioned as a rooted period drama that explores a lesser-known chapter from Kerala’s socio-cultural past. According to the team, the film narrates the story of an extraordinary ‘chattambi’ or ruffian, set against the backdrop of Kerala’s renaissance era.

Set in the late 1950s, the narrative unfolds within migrant farming communities in the high ranges, an environment rarely explored in mainstream Malayalam cinema. With its blend of history and character-driven storytelling, the film appears to be aiming for both scale and emotional depth.

Strong ensemble and technical backing

Penned by S Suresh Babu, Pallichattambi features Kayadu Lohar and Vijayaraghavan in key roles alongside Tovino Thomas. The film also boasts a robust supporting cast that includes Prashanth Alexander, Baburaj, Johny Antony, Sudheer Karamana, TG Ravi, Sreejith Ravi and Vinod Kedamangalam.

Behind the scenes, the film is backed by a seasoned technical crew. Composer Jakes Bejoy handles the music, while Tijo Tomy serves as the cinematographer. Editing is by Sreejith Sarang, with production design by Dileep Nath and action choreography by Action Sandhosh. The project is produced by Noufal and Brijeesh under the banners World Wide Films and C Cube Bros.

With Pallichattambi moving out of the April 10 slot, the release calendar sees a notable shift. Mohiniyattam, the sequel to the 2024 film Bharathanatyam, will now be the only Malayalam release hitting theatres this weekend.

Directed by Krishnadas Murali, Mohiniyattam brings back much of the original ensemble cast, including Saiju Kurup, Kalaranjini, Sreeja Ravi, Swathi Das Prabhu, Nandu Pothuval, Abhiram Radhakrishnan, Sruthy Suresh, Divya M Nair, Jinil Rexa and Jivin Rexa. The sequel also introduces new additions such as Vinay Forrt, Baby Jean, Suraj Venjaramoodu and Nisthar Sait, hinting at an expanded narrative canvas.

The reshuffle adds an interesting dynamic to the box office landscape. While Mohiniyattam benefits from a solo release window, Pallichattambi gears up for a festive clash, where expectations and audience turnout are traditionally higher.

As Vishu approaches, all eyes will now be on whether Tovino Thomas’ period drama can translate its intriguing premise and ensemble strength into a strong theatrical opening.
