As excitement builds for Nitesh Tiwari’s Ramayana, new details from the film’s set are beginning to surface. While Ranbir Kapoor’s casting as Lord Rama has seen its share of mixed reactions online, his co-star Surabhi Das has come forward to share an insider’s perspective on his transformation. Surabhi, who is set to play the role of Shrutakirti, the sister of Sita (played by Sai Pallavi), expressed her admiration for Ranbir’s dedication and presence during the shoot.
In a conversation with Mid-Day, Surabhi described her experience on the set as overwhelming. She recalled the moment she first saw Ranbir in his costume, saying, “When Ranbir Kapoor came on set, he obviously came as Rama. I literally felt like, ‘My God, this guy is actually looking like Rama.'” According to her, he remained deeply immersed in the role even when the cameras weren’t rolling. She added, “In all the scenes we did together, I always felt that he was in character.”

Beyond the physical appearance, Surabhi shared that Ranbir managed to capture the spiritual essence required for the legendary figure. She explained, “To play Lord Rama, you need to have that aura and grace. When you walk on set, you need to have that energy about you that makes people look at you no matter what. And Ranbir Kapoor carried that.” She further mentioned that his naturally introverted personality helped him maintain that specific energy and aura throughout the filming.
Surabhi also had warm words for her on-screen sister, Sai Pallavi. Despite the high-profile nature of the film, she mentioned that Sai Pallavi stayed true to her signature minimalist style. She said, “And even for Sai Pallavi, we know she doesn’t apply much makeup, yet she was looking so pretty.”
This praise comes at a time when Ranbir himself has talked about the gravity of the role. During a teaser launch event in Los Angeles, he admitted he was initially hesitant when producer Namit Malhotra approached him four years ago. Ranbir had shared, “My instant reaction was No’, I’m not fit enough, not good enough, and I won’t be able to do full justice.” However, he revealed that the birth of his daughter, Raha, changed his outlook, turning his fear into a sense of gratitude for the opportunity.
Produced by Namit Malhotra and Yash on a massive budget of Rs 4,000 crore, Ramayana is set to be a two-part spectacle. The star-studded cast includes Sunny Deol as Lord Hanuman, Yash as Ravana, and Ravie Dubey as Lakshman. The first part is slated for a Diwali 2026 release, followed by the second part in Diwali 2027.
