Jayasurya and Jithin K Jose Kick Off New Thriller With Temple Ceremony

Malayalam cinema’s knack for blending rooted mythology with genre storytelling seems set to gain another intriguing addition. Actor Jayasurya and filmmaker Jithin K Jose have officially commenced their upcoming project with a traditional pooja ceremony at Mookambika Temple. The actor shared the update on Sunday, marking the first public milestone for what is already shaping up to be a highly anticipated collaboration.

While principal photography is scheduled to begin after the summer, the ceremonial launch hints at the scale and cultural grounding the makers are aiming for. Industry chatter suggests that the project will lean heavily into mysticism, drawing from regional ritual practices and folklore rarely explored in mainstream Malayalam cinema.

Black magic, folklore and big-screen ambition

Though the title remains under wraps, early reports indicate that the film will revolve around themes of black magic, with a specific focus on the Karuthachan Oottu ritual. Known for its eerie cultural associations and spiritual undertones, the ritual offers fertile ground for a thriller that can balance atmosphere with narrative intensity.

Backing the film is producer Rajeev Govindan under the banner of Magic Moon Productions. The production house has previously delivered notable projects such as Ordinary and Anarkali, both of which found a strong connection with audiences. The banner is also associated with Kaaliyan, the ambitious period film starring Prithviraj Sukumaran.

For Jithin K Jose, this project marks a crucial follow-up to his debut film Kalamkaval, which emerged as one of the most talked-about thrillers of 2025. Featuring powerhouse performers like Mammootty and Vinayakan, the film struck a chord with critics and audiences alike, praised for its gripping narrative and grounded treatment of suspense. Expectations are naturally high for his second outing, especially with a concept that promises to expand both scale and thematic depth.

Jayasurya, meanwhile, continues to balance commercial entertainers with content-driven cinema. The actor was last seen in Aadu 3: One Last Ride – Part 1, which reportedly enjoyed a strong theatrical run, crossing significant box office milestones globally. Known for his versatility, Jayasurya stepping into a narrative steeped in ritualistic horror and psychological tension could open up yet another compelling chapter in his filmography.

The actor’s upcoming slate further reflects this diversity. He headlines Kathanar, directed by Prince Joy and co-starring Anushka Shetty, a film already generating buzz for its fantasy-horror premise. He is also set to appear in Operation Tral, a military action drama directed by Ratheesh Vega, indicating a packed and genre-spanning lineup ahead.

A collaboration to watch

With a promising director fresh off a successful debut and an actor known for reinventing himself across genres, this Jayasurya-Jithin K Jose film arrives with both curiosity and expectation. The decision to anchor the story in ritualistic lore could give Malayalam cinema another visually rich and culturally textured thriller, provided the narrative finds the right balance between authenticity and cinematic flair.

As the team prepares to move into production later this year, more details including the title, supporting cast and technical crew are expected to be unveiled soon. For now, the film’s spiritual beginning at Mookambika Temple sets the tone for what could be an evocative blend of faith, fear, and folklore.
