Days after it was announced that Balan: The Boy would be showcased at the Marche du Film section of the Cannes Film Festival 2026, the makers have now confirmed the film’s theatrical release date. Directed by Manjummel Boys filmmaker Chidambaram, the film is slated to hit cinemas on June 19.
Though the makers are still keeping plot details tightly under wraps, Balan: The Boy is described as an emotional drama that explores themes of identity and survival, with a mother-son relationship forming the emotional centre of the narrative.
The project marks Chidambaram’s second directorial venture after the phenomenal success of Manjummel Boys in 2024. The survival thriller, inspired by a real-life incident involving a group of friends at the Guna Caves in Kodaikanal, emerged as both a critical and commercial sensation. The film crossed Rs 240 crore at the box office and went on to become one of the highest-grossing Malayalam films of all time, firmly establishing Chidambaram as one of the industry’s most exciting young filmmakers.
With Balan: The Boy, the director appears to be revisiting familiar emotional terrain. Survival once again seems to play a key role, although this time the storytelling appears more intimate and character-driven.
Jithu Madhavan and Sushin Shyam reunite with Chidambaram
One of the film’s biggest talking points is the creative team assembled behind it. Chidambaram has co-written the screenplay with Jithu Madhavan, the filmmaker behind Romancham and the blockbuster Aavesham. The collaboration brings together two of Malayalam cinema’s most distinctive contemporary voices, both known for blending grounded emotions with energetic storytelling.
Music for the film has been composed by Sushin Shyam, continuing his successful partnership with Chidambaram after Manjummel Boys. Sushin’s soundtrack and background score for the 2024 hit played a major role in shaping the film’s immersive atmosphere, and expectations are naturally high for their reunion.
The technical crew also includes several acclaimed names from Malayalam cinema. Shyju Khalid serves as cinematographer, while Vivek Harshan handles editing. Production design is by Ajayan Chalissery, whose recent work has drawn praise for its textured realism and visual detailing.
Balan: The Boy is produced by Venkat K Narayana under the KVN Productions banner, alongside Shailaja Desai Fenn of Thespian Films.
The film’s selection at the Cannes Marche du Film has already generated considerable curiosity around the project. While the section functions primarily as a global film market rather than the festival’s main competition slate, inclusion there often helps films gain international visibility and distribution opportunities.
For Chidambaram, whose debut unexpectedly evolved into a pan-Indian success story, Balan: The Boy now carries the weight of expectation. Yet the early details suggest that the filmmaker is not attempting to recreate the scale or spectacle of Manjummel Boys. Instead, he appears to be focusing on a more intimate exploration of survival and human connection.
Whether the film can replicate the cultural impact of his debut remains to be seen, but it has already emerged as one of the most anticipated Malayalam releases of the year.
