Backrooms is finally heading to Indian cinemas. The upcoming horror film has already built massive buzz online and is one of the most talked-about internet-inspired movies in recent years.
Directed by Kane Parsons, the film stars Chiwetel Ejiofor, Renate Reinsve and Mark Duplass in key roles. The story follows a therapist who enters a strange and terrifying alternate dimension while searching for a missing patient. Inside this mysterious world, reality starts to break apart, time behaves strangely and endless empty hallways seem to stretch forever.

For people unfamiliar with the internet phenomenon, the Backrooms began as a viral horror story online. It first gained attention after a creepy image of empty, yellow office-like hallways was shared on the internet years ago. The image showed a strange space with buzzing fluorescent lights, stained yellow walls, and endless rooms that looked oddly familiar but deeply unsettling.
Internet users started imagining a terrifying idea: what if someone accidentally “glitched” out of reality and ended up trapped in this endless maze with no way out? Over time, the concept exploded online. Thousands of people created stories, theories, games and videos around the idea of the Backrooms.
The concept became especially popular among younger internet users because it relied less on jump scares and more on psychological fear, loneliness and the uncomfortable feeling of being stuck in a place that feels wrong.
The film is based on the hugely viral YouTube series created by Kane Parsons, who became famous for making realistic found-footage style Backrooms videos as a teenager. His videos racked up millions of views and helped turn the internet myth into a worldwide horror sensation. Now, the phenomenon is making its jump from internet folklore to the big screen.
Backrooms promises a very different kind of horror experience for audiences. The film releases in cinemas across India on May 29.
