Now, Luigi’s lawyers have asserted on planning a psychiatric defense at his murder trial. This is because Luigi has claimed of suffering from extreme emotional disturbance when he had gunned UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.

A judge reportedly noted that Luigi Mangione could spend less time in prison if he is able to prove psychiatric defense in his case. Well, a jury that will accept such a defence will be obligated to convict Luigi of manslaughter instead of murder. If Luigi is convicted of manslaughter then he has to spend 25 years in prison and if is convicted of murder then he has to spend rest of his life in prison. A 28-year-old, Luigi, has been facing charges of killing the UnitedHealthcare CEO, Brian Thompson. It was on June 17, 2026, when he appeared in court in New York. Judge Gregory Carro had shared that the lawyers of Luigi informed him that they would be asserting a psychiatric defense. This will be done to show that Luigi battled extreme emotional disturbance at the time of the occurrence.
