Shraddha Kapoor’s upcoming film Eetha, inspired by the life of legendary Lavani artiste Vithabai Narayangaonkar, has landed in the middle of a title controversy.
The debate first began after the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP)’s Film and Cultural Department questioned why the biopic was not named after Vithabai herself. Now, the late performer’s family has also voiced similar concerns, saying the title Eetha fails to give due recognition to the woman whose life the film is based on.
According to a TV9 Marathi report, the NCP’s Film and Cultural Department believes that a biographical film on Vithabai Narayangaonkar should have been titled Vitha or Vithabai, arguing that the title should directly honour the celebrated artiste and her contribution to Maharashtra’s cultural heritage.
The demand has since been backed by Vithabai’s family. Her sons, Kailash Narayangaonkar and Rajesh Narayangaonkar, along with her grandson Mohit Narayangaonkar, have reportedly expressed their disappointment with the title Eetha.
The family has maintained that since the film chronicles Vithabai’s life, it should carry her name and appropriately acknowledge her legacy. They have also reportedly sought clarification from the makers about the reasoning behind the title and whether it truly reflects the story of the iconic performer.
As of now, neither Shraddha Kapoor nor the filmmakers have responded to the controversy. Vithabai Narayangaonkar was one of Maharashtra’s most celebrated Lavani and Tamasha artistes. Revered for her powerful stage presence and unmatched performances, she played a pivotal role in popularising the traditional folk art forms across the state and remains one of their most influential figures.
Eetha stars Shraddha Kapoor in the lead role and is based on Vithabai Narayangaonkar’s extraordinary life and journey. Directed by Laxman Uketar, it will be released theatrically on August 28.
