Radikaa Sarathkumar Slams Media Intrusion at K Bhagyarajs Funeral

The passing of veteran filmmaker K Bhagyaraj has left the Tamil film industry in mourning, but the circumstances surrounding his final farewell have also sparked an important conversation about privacy and dignity. Actor and producer Radikaa Sarathkumar, one of the first celebrities to reach Bhagyaraj’s residence after learning of his sudden demise, has strongly criticised the conduct of sections of the media during the funeral proceedings.

Having stayed by the family’s side from the moment Bhagyaraj’s mortal remains were brought home from the hospital, Radikaa witnessed first-hand the crowds and commotion that unfolded outside and inside the residence. Disturbed by what she described as an invasion of privacy, she has now called for strict guidelines to prevent media personnel from entering funeral homes.

Radikaa demands dignity for grieving families

Taking to X, Radikaa expressed her disappointment over the lack of sensitivity shown during the filmmaker’s final rites. She urged both the government and the film fraternity to introduce clear protocols that would allow families and close friends to mourn without unnecessary intrusion.

“A place where all needed to digress and mourn in silence, turned into a circus, for all who came to pay their respects. Where and when do we change or rather changed to this callousness,” she wrote, while calling for a “restraining order” against media houses entering funeral venues. She added that such measures were necessary to preserve the “dignity to departed souls.”

Alongside her message, Radikaa shared a series of throwback photographs with Bhagyaraj, reflecting on a friendship that spanned nearly five decades. Remembering him as both an exceptional filmmaker and a loyal friend, she wrote, “He is a great creator, an evolved writer, a person who drew wonderful boundaries in Cinema, and a man with whom I shared many laughs, wonderful work. He stood by my family always in his quiet and loyal ways (sic).” She described his passing as a “shocking goodbye.”

Chaotic scenes spark wider debate

Radikaa’s criticism comes after emotionally charged scenes unfolded during Bhagyaraj’s funeral. At one point, she directly appealed to members of the media to allow the family space to grieve.

“If you want drama for the sake of TRP ratings, I will deliver that through films. Here, give us some privacy, please,” she said while addressing reporters gathered at the venue.

The actor herself was caught in the chaos as visuals of her being mobbed by crowds and cameras quickly went viral on social media. The situation briefly resembled a stampede, highlighting concerns over crowd management and media access during public funerals.

She was not alone in voicing her frustration. Actor Suhasini Maniratnam also confronted media personnel during Bhagyaraj’s final procession, asking them to stop filming the deeply personal moments. In one widely circulated video, she can be heard warning, “I will give you a tight slap with a slipper,” as she attempted to create space for the grieving family.

Bhagyaraj passed away on Saturday after suffering a cardiac arrest, leaving behind a remarkable cinematic legacy that spanned more than five decades. Widely regarded as one of Tamil cinema’s most influential writer-directors, he crafted memorable films including Suvarilladha Chiththirangal, Andha 7 Naatkal, Mundhanai Mudichu and Chinna Veedu. His funeral was conducted with full State honours, while his eyes were donated in keeping with a pledge he had made years ago.

His death came just days after the Tamil film industry bid farewell to another legendary filmmaker, Bharathiraja. Bhagyaraj had begun his career as an assistant to Bharathiraja on the landmark film 16 Vayathinile before emerging as one of Tamil cinema’s most distinctive creative voices.

Even as tributes continue to pour in for the late filmmaker, Radikaa’s appeal has shifted attention towards a larger issue, raising questions about whether public figures and their families deserve greater privacy and dignity during moments of profound personal loss.
