Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar recently addressed the controversy surrounding his devotional song “Mahakal Chalo,” which he performed in collaboration with singer Palash Sen. The song, released ahead of Mahashivratri, has faced criticism from a priests’ association for allegedly misrepresenting Sanatan Dharma.
The association’s president, Mahesh Sharma, expressed disapproval over specific visuals in the music video, particularly scenes where Akshay embraces a Shivling and has Panchamrit Abhishek performed on him. Sharma stated that such depictions are inappropriate and disrespectful to Hindu traditions.
In response to the backlash, Akshay Kumar clarified his intentions, emphasizing his deep respect and devotion towards Lord Shiva. He stated that the portrayal was meant to express his reverence and that there was no intention to offend religious sentiments. Akshay urged the public to understand the context of the performance and not misinterpret his devotion.
Despite the controversy, singer Palash Sen praised Akshay for his dedication and humility during the collaboration. Sen noted that Akshay memorized the entire song before filming began, showcasing his respect for the project.
“Mahakal Chalo” has garnered significant attention online, amassing over seven lakh views on YouTube since its release. The song aims to celebrate the spirit of Mahashivratri and honor Lord Shiva through music and visuals.
As discussions continue, Akshay Kumar has expressed hope that audiences will perceive the song as a heartfelt tribute to Lord Shiva and not as a misrepresentation of religious practices.
