Born as Jaya Bhaduri on April 9, 1948, in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, she grew up in a culturally rich Bengali family. She studied at Loreto Convent in Calcutta and later trained at the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune, under renowned filmmaker Ritwik Ghatak. She graduated as a gold medalist, showing early signs of her dedication. Interestingly, her first appearance on screen was a small role in Mahanagar (1963), directed by Satyajit Ray.

Her breakthrough came with Guddi (1971), directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee. She played a simple schoolgirl who admired Dharmendra and audiences instantly connected with her natural charm. Unlike many glamorous stars of that time, Jaya represented simplicity and relatability, which became her signature style. She was even nominated for the Filmfare best actress award for her role in Guddi.

She went on to deliver strong performances in films like Uphaar, Piya Ka Ghar, and Koshish, where she portrayed a mute woman alongside Sanjeev Kumar. Her work with filmmakers like Hrishikesh Mukherjee and Gulzar showed her emotional depth and realistic acting.

In 1973, she married Amitabh Bachchan. The couple appeared together in memorable films like Abhimaan, Chupke Chupke, and Sholay. In Abhimaan, she played a singer dealing with challenges in marriage and career, a role still praised for its depth. During Amitabh’s rise as the “angry young man” of Bollywood, Jaya chose to focus more on family life, especially after the birth of their children, Shweta Bachchan and Abhishek Bachchan.

After a break, she returned with meaningful roles, starting with Hazaar Chaurasi Ki Maa. She later played strong motherly roles in Fiza, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, and Kal Ho Naa Ho. Even in recent years, her role in Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahani showed her lasting impact across generations.

In 2004, Jaya entered politics as a Rajya Sabha member from the Samajwadi Party, representing Uttar Pradesh. She has been re-elected multiple times and is known for speaking confidently on social and cultural issues.
