DYK Sholay Was Declared Flop By Media Because Of Its Huge Budget Of Rs. 3 Crore?

When a film completes 50 years and still fills cinema halls, you know it’s not just a movie, it’s history. That’s exactly what has happened with Sholay, which returned to theatres in 2025, reminding audiences why it remains one of Indian cinema’s most loved classics.

Directed by Ramesh Sippy, the iconic film marked its golden jubilee in August. To make the celebration even more special, the makers re-released the film with its original climax, the version where Gabbar Singh meets his end. Titled The Final Cut, this restored version hit the cinemas on December 12, 2025, and gave the fans a chance to experience the story as it was first imagined.

In an interview, Ramesh Sippy opened up about the film’s difficult beginnings. Today, it may be considered a masterpiece but back in 1975, the journey was far from smooth.

Made on a massive budget of Rs 3 crore, an enormous sum at that time, Sholay was viewed as a dangerous financial gamble. Ramesh Sippy revealed that the original plan was to make the film for Rs 1 crore but the scale expanded, pushing costs to three times that amount. To put things in perspective, he explained that Rs 1 crore back then would equal nearly Rs 100 crore today.

When the film first released, the response was underwhelming. Trade analysts and newspapers were quick to label it a flop. Many believed such expensive productions would harm the industry and that the makers would never recover their investment. There were even discussions among distributors, exhibitors and producers expressing relief that the “big film” hadn’t worked. Some thought the team had taken a foolish risk.

However, just five weeks later, everything changed. Word of mouth began to build, audiences connected with the story and the film’s fortunes turned dramatically. The same critics who had doubted it admitted they were wrong. Sholay went on to become an all-time blockbuster, reshaping box-office expectations and proving that ambitious filmmaking could succeed.

Interestingly, Ramesh Sippy shared that throughout the phase of uncertainty, the film’s writers — Javed Akhtar and Salim Khan, remained confident about its eventual success.

The film also faced challenges beyond box-office doubts. During the Emergency period, censorship rules were strict. The censor board objected to the original climax because Sanjeev Kumar’s character Thakur Baldev Singh who was a police officer was shown k*lling Gabbar. Authorities insisted that Gabbar should be arrested instead. With no room to argue, Ramesh Sippy had to reshoot the climax in Bangalore to comply with the order.

Now, five decades later, audiences finally saw the ending as it was originally shot, a creative choice Ramesh Sippy had strongly believed in.

The film’s unforgettable cast included Amitabh Bachchan as Jai, Dharmendra as Veeru, Amjad Khan as Gabbar Singh, Hema Malini as Basanti, Sanjeev Kumar as Thakur Baldev Singh, Jaya Bachchan as Radha, Mac Mohan as Sambha, Asrani as the Jailor and Sachin Pilgaonkar as Ahmed.

What began as a film many feared would fail ultimately became a benchmark for success, a reminder that sometimes the biggest risks create the greatest legends.
