From the adorable little girl in Hum Saath Saath Hain to the composed and powerful Priya Khoopchandani in the Netflix hit Taskaree, Zoya Afroz has come a long way. Currently basking in the global success of the series, Zoya sat down with us for an exclusive chat about her whirlwind journey, her chemistry with Emraan Hashmi, and why she believes silence is never wasted in this industry.

The 16-Hour Audition Dash
While many actors wait for years for a big break, Zoya’s moment came when she was 4,000 kilometers away in Assam, visiting family after 12 years. She recalled, “I had just landed, and on the second day, I got a call saying, ‘Can you meet us right now?’” When she realized it was for a Neeraj Pandey project opposite Emraan Hashmi, she didn’t hesitate. She shared, “I travelled 16 hours, two flights and long car journeys to get back to Mumbai. My cousins asked if I’d at least secured the role, and I said, ‘No, I’m just going to audition.’ You wait for these opportunities; when they come, you just dive in.”
On the Sets of Taskaree
The gamble paid off. Within days of the audition, Zoya was on set. Interestingly, her very first shot was the show’s most intense interrogation scene. She said, “I jokingly tell everyone that Neeraj sir had so much trust in me to give me the heaviest scene on day one. Working with him is like a masterclass in subtlety. He doesn’t over-direct, he nudges you toward the truth.”
Speaking about her co-star Emraan Hashmi, Zoya was all praise for his versatility and off-screen persona. She said, “I was always a fan of his work in Shanghai and The Dirty Picture but meeting him made me a fan of the human being he is. He’s very charming and fun on set, which helped us break the ice immediately.”

Staying Relevant Without the Noise
In an era obsessed with social media numbers, Zoya remains refreshingly grounded. Her philosophy is simple: focus on the craft, not the fame. She shared, “Don’t chase just the fame. Years spent working in silence are never wasted. Relevance comes when people talk about your performance, not your vanity. Keep your head down, keep your intention pure, and eventually, it pays off.”
Looking Ahead: 2026 and Beyond
With Taskaree sitting pretty on the global Top 10 charts, Zoya is already gearing up for her next Netflix outing, Yeh Dil Sun Raha Hai. While Taskaree was a game of the mind, she says her next role is all about the heart. She cheekily mentioned, “In Taskaree, Priya played with the mind. This time, I will only listen to the ‘Dil’. It’s a heart-wrenching, intense story, and you’ll see a very different Zoya.”
As for her personal goals, she continues to advocate for girl-child education and financial independence for women. She rightfully mentioned, “I’m able to live my dream because some woman in a different century fought for her rights. I want to take that forward.”
