Raj Babbar married iconic theatre actress, Nadira in 1975, and they welcomed two kids, Arya Babbar and Juhi Babbar. Unfortunately, the couple decided to part ways around 1982 or 1983 when cracks started appearing in their marriage. During his separation from Nadira, Raj was also in contact with Smita Patil, whom he had met on the sets of their film, Bheegi Palkein in 1980, which was released in 1982. As per reports back then, Smita and Raj’s love was reportedly the reason behind the latter’s decision to leave his first wife, Nadira.

Raj Babbar and Smita Patil got married in 1983, and it came as a shock to the entire film industry. The couple faced much backlash, as Nadira labelled the iconic actress ‘Homebreaker’. However, as time passed, the storm was settled, and in 1986, Raj and Smita welcomed their first and only child, a baby boy whom they had named Prateik Babbar. Unfortunately, while giving birth to Prateik, Smita died due to childbirth complications at the mere age of 31.
