The Ramayana Casting Debate: Can Ranbir Kapoor Capture The Spirit Of Lord Rama ?

The “innocence” debate around Nitesh Tiwari’s Ramayana kicked off the moment the teaser landed on Hanuman Jayanti. But the real conversation started when the stars of the original 1987 show weighed in, and they couldn’t be further apart. Arun Govil, who defined the role for millions and now plays King Dasharath in this version, has been very supportive. He called Ranbir a cultured actor who respects the roots of the story. On the other hand, Sunil Lahri, the original Lakshman was much more critical. He mentioned that while Ranbir is a great actor, he lacks the calm and innocence that the character needs. He even suggested Ranbir looks a bit too harsh for the part.

This brings up a massive challenge for Bollywood in 2026: Can a modern superstar ever truly look “divine” to an audience that knows everything about them?

The “Animal” in the Room

Sunil Lahri’s comment about Ranbir looking harsh is hard to ignore. It’s a direct byproduct of the roles Ranbir has played recently. When you’ve just spent months watching an actor play a violent, intense character like in Animal, it’s a big jump to see those same eyes representing peace and divinity. Back in the ‘80s, the actors were like blank slates. They didn’t have Instagram or weekly paparazzi photos at the airport. Today, we know too much about our stars. Can we forget the superstar long enough to see the “Prince”?

Human vs. Holy

Nitesh Tiwari seems to be taking a different route. Instead of a smiling, untouchable god, he seems to be crafting a Rama who is deeply human. If Ranbir looks harsh or tired, maybe that’s the point. The journey to the forest and the fight for Dharma isn’t supposed to be easy. Maybe innocence isn’t what we need in 2026. We’ve seen the world change, and perhaps we need a Rama who looks like he has felt the weight of the world on his shoulders.

The Bottom Line

At the end of the day, you can’t make a movie of this scale without a massive star. While nostalgia makes us crave the simple, calm faces of the ‘80s, modern cinema demands a certain intensity to keep us hooked. Arun Govil is happy to pass the torch, but Sunil Lahri’s hesitation represents what a lot of traditional fans are feeling. Ranbir Kapoor has the acting chops – that’s never been the question. The real test will be whether he can make us forget the “Animal” and believe in Lord Rama when the film finally hits theatres.
