A decade ago, Shah Rukh Khan took a risk with Fan, a film that explored the darker side of fandom. Directed by Maneesh Sharma, the film told the story of a fan who turns against his idol. Fan follows Gaurav Chandna, a young man from Delhi who idolises Bollywood superstar Aryan Khanna.
He travels to Mumbai to meet him, but things take a turn after a disappointing encounter. What begins as admiration soon turns into anger, leading to a conflict between the fan and the star.
The film is considered one of Shah Rukh Khan’s most experimental projects. He stepped away from his superstar image to play Gaurav, while also portraying Aryan. The dual role required him to undergo prosthetic transformation and present two very different personalities on screen.
While Fan received mixed reviews upon its release, it has been noted for its concept and attempt at a different kind of storytelling.
