Rani Mukerji has stood the test of time for three remarkable decades in an industry that keeps changing. To mark the milestone of 30 years of her career, Rani joined Karan Johar for a heart-to-heart conversation, reflecting on the journey that transformed her from a hesitant debutante into one of Bollywood’s most respected performers.
Rani’s journey began with the 1996 film Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat, a project she took on with little personal ambition. She recalled, “I think Raja Ki Aayegi Baarat has to be one of those moments in my life where truly even when I look back, I really don’t know what I was doing. I was just following my mother’s instructions. I thought my mum wants me to do it and I have to do it to the best of my ability.”
However, it was the support of industry stalwarts that changed her trajectory. She shared, “After the film, the kindness that was shown to me by Adi (Aditya Chopra), you (Karan), Shah Rukh Khan, Aamir Khan was priceless and they probably thought that I was okay enough to be part of their films.”
Karan Johar revealed an interesting detail about Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, revealing that it was actually Aditya Chopra who suggested casting Rani as Tina. Despite several leading ladies passing on the role, Aditya’s keen eye saw the talent Rani possessed, a suggestion that would eventually give her a big breakthrough.
As the discussion shifted to her craft, Rani spoke passionately about her landmark films. She described her experience on the sets of Black as nothing short of a masterclass. Working alongside Amitabh Bachchan and under the visionary direction of Sanjay Leela Bhansali, she said that every moment taught her something invaluable about acting, dedication, and the soul of cinema. Similarly, she recalled the raw authenticity of Saathiya, which was shot entirely in sync sound and on real locations, a rarity at the time that helped her deliver a grounded performance.
Beyond the lights and cameras, the event touched upon Rani’s personal world. Opening up about her husband, Aditya Chopra, Rani shared a rare glimpse into their bond. She said, “It’s his simplicity that draws me towards him,” explaining how his grounded nature and quiet charm have remained a source of comfort throughout their life together.
The emotional high point of the evening came when Karan Johar read aloud a heartfelt letter written by Rani’s daughter, Adira. The adorable message left Rani moved. On the work front, Rani will be seen in her upcoming movie, Mardaani 3 which releases on January 30.
