Filmmaker Sujoy Ghosh has received significant legal relief after the Supreme Court of India quashed criminal proceedings against him in connection with the copyright case surrounding his 2016 film Kahaani 2. The decision brings an end to a prolonged legal dispute that had cast a shadow over the critically acclaimed thriller for several years.
The case originated from allegations that the storyline of Kahaani 2 was copied from a novel titled The God Child, written by author Srijit Mukherji. A complaint was filed accusing Ghosh of copyright infringement, leading to criminal proceedings being initiated against the filmmaker.
The accusations had sparked debate within the film industry about originality, creative ownership, and the legal risks associated with storytelling.
However, the Supreme Court observed that the dispute did not warrant criminal prosecution and was more appropriately a matter of civil nature. By quashing the proceedings, the court effectively ruled that the case lacked sufficient grounds to continue under criminal law.
This judgment not only clears Ghosh of legal burden but also reinforces the distinction between civil disputes and criminal liability in matters of intellectual property.
Kahaani 2, starring Vidya Balan and Arjun Rampal, had been widely appreciated for its gripping narrative and performances upon release. Despite its success, the legal controversy surrounding its storyline had remained unresolved until now.
The verdict is likely to be seen as a significant precedent in the film industry, particularly in cases involving alleged copyright violations. It highlights the judiciary’s cautious approach in applying criminal law to creative disputes and may influence how similar cases are handled in the future.
For Sujoy Ghosh, the ruling marks a decisive closure to a long-standing issue, allowing him to move forward without the weight of legal uncertainty tied to one of his notable works.
