The Malayalam film industry continues to buzz with new pairings and promising debuts, and the latest to join that list is Shani, headlined by Arjun Ashokan and Roshan Mathew. The project was formally launched on Monday with a traditional pooja ceremony held in Angamaly, marking the beginning of what appears to be an intriguing new venture.
Helmed by debutant filmmaker Suvin S Somasekharan, the film already carries a degree of curiosity, given his writing credits on Nadikar and Star. With Shani, Suvin steps into the director’s chair, aiming to translate his writing sensibilities into a full-fledged cinematic vision.
Joining Arjun and Roshan is Gouri G Kishan as the female lead. The supporting cast includes familiar faces such as Balu Varghese, Harisree Ashokan, Jeo Baby and Veena Nair, among others, hinting at a film that blends youth appeal with seasoned performers.
Strong technical backing and mystery intact
Backing the film behind the camera is an experienced technical team. Veteran cinematographer Venu handles the visuals, while Ratheesh Raj takes charge of editing. Music is composed by the acclaimed duo Yakzan Gary Pereira and Neha Nair, known for their distinct soundscapes in contemporary Malayalam cinema.
Produced by Sultan Jasani and Chetan Deoolekar under Jasani Entertainment INC and 6 Dimensions Films and Media LLP, Shani is currently keeping its cards close to the chest. The makers have chosen not to reveal details about the plot or genre, adding an element of intrigue to the project. What is confirmed, however, is that principal photography will unfold in and around Aluva, a location that has increasingly become a cinematic hotspot in recent years.
Busy line-ups for both leads
Both Arjun Ashokan and Roshan Mathew are riding active phases in their careers. Arjun is gearing up for the release of Varavu, directed by Shaji Kailas and headlined by Joju George, which is slated to hit theatres in May. He also has a diverse slate ahead, including Melcow Pondicherry and Disco, the latter directed by Ullas Chemban.
Roshan Mathew, meanwhile, was last seen in the sports-comedy action film Chatha Pacha: The Ring of Rowdies, where he shared screen space with Arjun. Their reunion in Shani adds a layer of familiarity and chemistry that audiences may look forward to.
With a promising ensemble, a technically sound crew and a director stepping into new territory, Shani positions itself as one to watch. As filming gears up, the mystery surrounding its narrative might just be its biggest hook.
