According to Western trade reports, the film is expected to be a spy thriller with a Russia-related backdrop. Interestingly, the prestigious project has a Telugu connection. The screenplay is reportedly being written by filmmaker Aneesh Chaganty, who was born to Telugu immigrant parents in the United States. Chaganty is best known for directing critically acclaimed thrillers like Searching and Run. Reports further claim that he has been rewriting Doppelgänger specifically with Tom Cruise in mind.

Before becoming a noted filmmaker, Chaganty gained widespread attention through a Google Glass advertisement that went viral online, crossing over a million views within a short span. The success led him to work at Google Creative Lab, where he directed commercials and experimental projects. He had earlier directed a short film titled Seeds in 2014, which also earned appreciation for its storytelling style.

According to reports, Doppelgänger revolves around an identity mystery involving a man who is gradually replaced by an identical entity. The concept reportedly aligns with Tom Cruise’s recent preference for high-stakes and psychologically layered thrillers. Industry insiders suggest that the script explores themes of fractured reality, paranoia, and hidden motives. There is also speculation that Cruise could play a dual role, or even multiple versions of the same character. Trade circles in Hollywood indicate that major studios are already showing interest in acquiring the project’s distribution rights, while a noted filmmaker is expected to direct the film.
