Heres How Ranveer Singh And Aditya Dhar Managed High-Stakes Success With The Dhurandhar Franchise

The Dhurandhar franchise, headlined by Ranveer Singh and directed by Aditya Dhar, has cemented its place as one of the highest-grossing success stories in Hindi cinema. While the box office figures have been a major talking point, the financial model behind the films’ production reveals a strategic approach to risk and reward.

Jyoti Deshpande, who co-produced the franchise under Jio Studios, recently shared insights into the business arrangements that powered the project. Contrary to common industry practices involving massive upfront payments, both Ranveer and Aditya opted for a model that prioritised a partnership in the film’s success.

Jyoti revealed, “In Dhurandhar, Ranveer came with a smaller fixed fee and a backend deal and therefore benefited from that arrangement.” She mentioned that a similar strategy was applied to director Aditya Dhar, who also co-produced the film with Lokesh Dhar under their banner, B62 Studios. She added, “The same was true for Aditya, who also came in with a smaller fixed fee and a backend. He ended up making a significant upside along with us. That’s how you distribute both the risk and the reward.”

The production journey was ambitious, with costs escalating beyond initial estimates. Jyoti further revealed, “On Dhurandhar, we went all in. The film ended up being made for almost double the amount we had initially set out to spend. Of course, we eventually ended up with a two-part film, so it became a journey. In the end, all of us went laughing to the bank.”

The franchise is currently making waves with its streaming strategy. The makers have implemented a dual release approach, catering to both international and domestic audiences through different platforms. While the “raw and undekha” version of Dhurandhar began streaming on Netflix globally on May 22, it remains unavailable to viewers in India. For the domestic market, JioHotstar has secured the exclusive streaming rights in a deal reportedly worth nearly Rs 150 crore. Dhurandhar: The Revenge will release on the platform on June 4, where audiences are expected to receive an extended cut of the film.
