Shyam Benegal passes away at 90

Ace director and screenwriter Shyam Benegal has passed away at the age of 90. According to a statement sent to the media, he breathed his last at about 6.30 pm at Wockhardt Hospital, Mumbai.

The timing of his cremation and last rites will be declared later by his family.


Benegal started his career with a Gujarati documentary film, titled Ghar Betha Ganga in 1962. He was also known for Ankur (1973), Nishant (1975), Manthan (1976) and Bhumika (1977).

In his lifetime, he has also received several accolades, including eighteen National Film Awards and Filmfare Awards. In 2005, he was honoured with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award as well.
