Rachel Shelley, who played the compassionate Elizabeth Russell in the 2001 classic, took to Instagram to share a series of photos from the festival. The images captured the pair sharing a side hug on the red carpet, with Aamir opting for a casual blue T-shirt and jeans, while Rachel appeared elegant in a white dress.
Sharing the pictures, Rachel wrote, “#Lagaan25Years. Thank you @aamirkhanproductions for a glorious Sunday morning celebration @bfifilmacademy @imaxuk #IndianFilmFestivalLondon.”
The reunion sparked excitement among fans who took to social media to express their joy. Comments ranged from admiration for the enduring legacy of the film to humorous references to the characters. Earlier this year, when Lagaan was re-released in India, Rachel talked about the film’s lasting impact through a heartfelt video. She said, “Sometimes I feel like it was just yesterday. And other times, it feels like another lifetime ago. I have to say that I feel that, as the cast and crew, we make the film. But the audience, by watching it and giving it so much love and support over the years, you’re the ones who complete the film. It’s with me every day. It’s informed every piece of work I have ever done since.”
Directed by Ashutosh Gowariker and produced by Aamir Khan, Lagaan remains one of Indian cinema’s most celebrated films, having earned an Academy Award nomination for Best International Feature Film.
