SS Rajamouli’s highly anticipated globe-trotting adventure Varanasi is set to release in theatres on April 7, 2027. While the Mahesh Babu-led spectacle is expected to be one of Indian cinema’s biggest global releases, its overseas rollout could face stiff competition from a packed Hollywood release calendar.
A crowded release corridor
The weeks surrounding Varanasi’s release are already filled with several major Hollywood titles. Warner Bros. is set to release Godzilla x Kong: Supernova on March 26, 2027, with an IMAX rollout. Lionsgate’s Day Drinker is also scheduled for the same date.
On April 2, Disney and Universal are expected to release two major event films, while April 9 is shaping up to be another crowded weekend with Warner Bros.’ Panic Carefully, Paramount’s Boys for Life, Warner Bros.’ Revenge of La Llorona and other studio releases. Universal’s Not Alone is slated to arrive on April 16. With multiple tentpole films targeting the same period, competition for audience attention is expected to be intense across key international markets.
Premium screens could be in high demand
Industry observers point out that premium formats such as IMAX often play a crucial role in driving opening weekend collections. With multiple Hollywood blockbusters already securing premium large-format releases, screen availability could become a challenge in markets such as North America, Europe, Australia and parts of Asia.
Rajamouli’s films have traditionally performed strongly overseas, particularly in North America, Australia and the Gulf region, thanks to their scale, visual spectacle and strong word-of-mouth. However, a crowded international release calendar could limit premium screen availability during the crucial opening week.
That said, Rajamouli’s films have consistently demonstrated strong staying power at the box office. If Varanasi generates positive audience response, it could continue attracting viewers beyond its opening weekend despite the competition.
Starring Mahesh Babu, Priyanka Chopra, Prithviraj Sukumaran and Prakash Raj, with music by MM Keeravani, Varanasi remains one of the most anticipated Indian films of 2027.
