Rumours of Rajkumar Hirani’s 2009 blockbuster 3 Idiots returning to theatres this September have officially been put to rest. After reports claimed that the beloved film would be re-released on September 4, 2026, the makers have now issued a clarification, stating that there are no such plans.
Makers Clarify There Is No September Re-Release
The speculation gathered momentum in recent days after Aamir Khan addressed the long-standing belief that the film’s iconic protagonist, Rancho, was inspired by education activist Sonam Wangchuk. The actor clarified that neither he nor the film’s writers were aware of Wangchuk while making the film, reigniting conversations around one of Hindi cinema’s most celebrated dramas.
Amid the renewed buzz, reports of a theatrical re-release began circulating online. However, Vidhu Vinod Chopra Films has now categorically denied them.
On Wednesday, July 22, the production house issued an official statement that read, “With reference to recent media reports claiming that 3 Idiots will be re-released on 4th September, Vidhu Vinod Chopra Films would like to clarify that these reports are false and factually incorrect.”
The clarification ends days of speculation among fans who had hoped to revisit Rancho, Farhan and Raju on the big screen once again.
Released in December 2009, 3 Idiots remains one of the biggest milestones in modern Hindi cinema. Directed by Rajkumar Hirani and produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra, the film starred Aamir Khan, R. Madhavan, Sharman Joshi, Kareena Kapoor Khan and Boman Irani. Adapted from Chetan Bhagat’s novel Five Point Someone, it struck a chord with audiences through its blend of comedy, emotion and a thought-provoking take on India’s education system. It also became one of the highest-grossing Indian films of its time and continues to enjoy enduring popularity across generations.

The Next Chapter Is Already Taking Shape
While fans may not be getting a theatrical re-release anytime soon, the franchise’s future remains bright. Earlier this year, Aamir Khan confirmed that Rajkumar Hirani is actively working on 3 Idiots 2. Speaking during the promotions of his son Junaid Khan’s film Ek Din, the actor revealed that he had already heard the story and was impressed by its direction.
“Raju is working on 3 Idiots 2 right now. I’ve heard the story, and it’s wonderful.”
He also revealed that the screenplay is still being refined but praised the concept for retaining the spirit of the original while taking the story forward. “It’s unusual, with the same humour as the first film, and follows the characters 10 years later.”

Although the sequel has generated considerable excitement, the makers are yet to announce the film officially. Details regarding the returning cast, production schedule and release date are still under wraps.
For now, while 3 Idiots may not be making its way back to cinemas this September, the promise of a long-awaited sequel continues to give fans something to look forward to.
