The trailer of Aamir Khan Productions’ next big project, Batwara 1947, has created a lot of buzz among the viewers. With less than a month to go for the theatrical release of the film, many are wondering if the Sunny Deol-starrer is inspired by a real story.
While the film isn’t necessarily based on a particular real-life event, it is not based on an original screenplay either. Directed by Rajkumar Santoshi, Batwara 1947 draws inspiration from an acclaimed play based on a powerful partition story that reportedly faced restrictions in Pakistan despite earning widespread critical acclaim.
What is Batwara 1947 based on?
Batwara 1947 adapts the core premise of Asghar Wajahat’s acclaimed 1989 play Jis Lahore Nai Vekhya, O Jamya E Nai (translated as One Who Has Not Seen Lahore Has Not Been Born). The story is set in the aftermath of the Partition of 1947, when a Muslim family is moved from Lucknow to the newly created Pakistan, where the family is allotted a deserted haveli in Lahore.
