Sudesh Berry Reveals How He Was Originally Cast Before Shah Rukh Khan in Darr

Shah Rukh Khan’s unforgettable “K-k-k… Kiran” from Darr (1993) remains one of Hindi cinema’s most iconic dialogues. At a time when leading stars were hesitant to play morally grey characters, Shah Rukh embraced the obsessive anti-hero, Rahul Mehra, and delivered a career-defining performance. However, the superstar was not the original choice for the role.

Actor Sudesh Berry has now revealed that he was initially signed to play the obsessive lover in Yash Chopra’s psychological thriller before the casting underwent a major change.

How the casting drama unfolded

Speaking on the Accompany Akki podcast, Sudesh Berry recalled that Yash Chopra had originally cast him opposite Juhi Chawla, with Sunny Deol playing the protagonist. However, as the project evolved, the filmmaker decided to revisit the casting.

“Initially, it was Rishi Kapoor, then Aamir Khan was considered, and then they finally cast Sunny Deol. Towards the end, there is a shot of my character punching the other person. Whoever played the other character, it appeared as if a bigger actor was being punched by Sudesh Berry. This is what I heard,” Berry shared.

He added that the filmmakers eventually replaced him with Shah Rukh Khan, a decision that would go on to change the course of Bollywood history.

No regrets over losing the role

Berry stressed that he holds no bitterness over the casting change, describing such developments as a natural part of the film industry. He acknowledged that the role ultimately became a defining moment in Shah Rukh Khan’s career, firmly establishing him as one of Hindi cinema’s biggest stars.

While Darr emerged as both a critical and commercial success, it also reportedly led to a long-standing rift between Sunny Deol and Shah Rukh Khan. The two actors were said to have remained distant for nearly 16 years following disagreements during the making of the film.

Reflecting on the phase in an earlier interview, Sunny had said, “It’s not that I didn’t talk, but I just cut myself off. I anyway don’t socialise much. So we never met, toh baat karne ki baat hi nahi hai.”
