Even while the glimpse of director SS Rajamouli’s Varanasi was out last year, and subsequently the cast gave interviews to foreign press, the film’s core plot was still kept under wraps. But looks like fans have got more to embrace about the film’s story according to the reports that are currently doing the rounds.
Varanasi revolves around ancient cosmic artefact
Apparently, Varanasi is set in 2027! According to the reports, the world faces an existential crisis when a massive asteroid named Shambhavi is on a direct collision with the holy city of Varanasi. A rugged archaeologist and explorer, Rudhra (Mahesh Babu), is hired for a high-stakes mission to recover an ancient cosmic artifact. Mandakini (Priyanka Chopra Jonas), a fierce historian and skilled marksman, will also join Rudhra in his mission. Their quest sets up a sci-fi globetrotting thriller as the film reportedly moves across the jungles of Africa, the icy wastes of Antarctica and the landscapes of Europe — pursued by the tech-genius villain Kumbha (Prithviraj Sukumaran). And the key to stopping a future catastrophe lies hidden within the city’s mythical past.
Varanasi boasts of several time periods
Ever since the rumoured core plot details have come out, fans couldn’t stop raving about how Rajamouli picked up a plot that is rooted in mythology and gave it a modern technological spin.
Recently, the director also revealed that Varanasi will take audiences across several locations and time periods. The story moves from Varanasi to Antarctica and Africa before going back in time to Ancient Rome and eventually returning to Varanasi. And with Varanasi becoming the first non-English film to be shot entirely in IMAX, fans are imagining the visual impact the narrative would create.
While Mahesh Babu’s principal character is said to be Rudhra, he will also appear as Lord Rama during a specific timeline. Varanasi is scheduled to release in theatres on April 7, 2027.
