He is a heavy drinker. For 41 days a year, though, he effortlessly observes abstinence. That’s during the Ayyappa Swamy Deeksha, one of the most rigorously observed rituals popular across the southern Indian states. His motive? His pre-teen daughter, Manikantha’s, well-being. Ravi Teja, otherwise a laid-back villager, can go to any extent as a father who knows only unconditional love for his daughter.
That’s Irumudi for you, a family action drama set to release in theatres on August 21. The Mass Maharaja turns vigilante when a major scandal breaks out at the Zilla Parishad school where his daughter, played by Baby Nakshathra, is studying. Priya Bhavani Shankar plays his wife, while veteran actor Sai Kumar has a prominent role.
Director Shiva Nirvana envisions a super-gutsy role for Ravi Teja, known for his high-energy performances and punchy action throughout his career. The father-daughter bond is adorned with heart-tugging emotions, while the action sequences appear to be blended with a spiritual aesthetic. “It’s my weakness to see my daughter in any young girl. Don’t mess with it,” the hero warns.
Irumudi genre is in vogue
Action movies with a spiritual touch have recently found success across Indian cinema. Films like Balakrishna’s Akhanda, Rishab Shetty’s Kantara, Nikhil Siddhartha’s Karthikeya 2 and Teja Sajja’s HanuMan have blended devotional elements with volatile action dramas. This trend shows how audiences connect deeply with stories where intense heroism aligns with faith, cultural roots and traditional spiritual themes. Irumudi follows this emerging tradition.
Ravi Teja’s second theatrical release
Ravi Teja is known for his versatility. Over the decades, he has switched from high-octane comedy to intense drama. His iconic dual roles as the fierce Vikram Rathore and the hilarious Athili Sathi Babu in Vikramarkudu reflect his range. His performances in Naa Autograph, Kick and Khadgam are also among his most acclaimed. Kick and Dhamakaare among his biggest hits.
Irumudi is Ravi Teja’s second theatrical release of the year. He was previously seen in a dual role in this year’s Bhartha Mahasayulaku Vignyapthi.
