At the turn of the century, Aman Verma was one of the most recognisable and successful faces on Indian television. He won over millions of viewers as a popular host on major shows like Khulja Sim Sim and Indian Idol, while also starring in the drama Kehta Hai Dil. His massive popularity on the small screen helped him land roles in hit Bollywood movies such as Baghban, Sangharsh, and Baabul. However, his thriving career came to a sudden and dramatic halt following a major nationwide controversy.
Everything changed in 2005 when a television channel aired a secret hidden-camera operation. A female reporter had posed as an aspiring actress looking for work and the video allegedly showed Aman Verma asking for physical favors in return for helping her career. The footage immediately triggered an intense public debate across the country about improper practices in the entertainment business.
Aman Verma strongly denied all the allegations and claimed the video was modified. He accused the news channel of selectively editing the footage, attempting to blackmail him and trying to extort money. Taking action to clear his name, he filed a criminal complaint against the network.
Even though the scandal severely damaged his reputation, several famous Bollywood personalities came forward to back him up. Big names like Salman Khan, Govinda, Sanjay Dutt, Arbaaz Khan and filmmakers Ravi Chopra and David Dhawan gathered at a press conference to call the video a setup designed to ruin his character.
Among all his supporters, Salman Khan made the most talked-about comments. He defended Aman Verma as a thirty-two-year-old single man who had not committed any crime or used force. He criticised the media for crossing boundaries by sending a decoy late at night and suggested the operation was an attempt to damage the film industry’s image, adding that he had never seen such practices in his fifteen years in Bollywood.
Years later, Aman Verma shared that while film stars stood by him, he felt completely let down by the television industry, where very few people supported him despite his nearly ten years of hard work there. Before the controversy, he was one of the busiest actors in showbiz. Afterward, his career suffered greatly, with major roles drying up. Although he eventually returned to act in TV shows and reality programs, the scandal permanently hung over his achievements.
