Sandeep Pradeep Gets a Quirky Superhero Introduction

The first teaser of Cosmic Samson, titled Curtain Raiser, is here, and it wastes little time establishing that this is unlikely to be a conventional superhero story. Headlined by Sandeep Pradeep, the upcoming Malayalam film introduces its protagonist through a deceptively casual rooftop sequence that ends with a rather unfortunate encounter with a car.

The 1-minute-24-second teaser begins at night, with a lone man seated on a rooftop and looking out over a sprawling city beneath a full moon. The mood is initially serene, helped along by the familiar strains of Ekaantha Chandrike from In Harihar Nagar. The nostalgia is interrupted when Samson receives a phone call from his father, played by veteran actor Mukesh.

“Hi Appa,” Samson says when he answers.

His father immediately wants to know where he is and why he has not returned home despite it being past 11 pm. Samson, seemingly in no hurry, tells him that he is “just chilling to some music”. His father’s response is considerably less relaxed. He orders his son to stop chilling and come home, to which Samson casually promises that he will be there soon.

That is when the teaser reveals its first glimpse of Samson’s apparent superpower. Without getting up or even breaking much of a sweat, he simply launches himself off the rooftop from his seated position. The camera remains behind as the night sky fills the frame, followed by the unmistakable sound of a heavy impact.

The next shot reveals the consequences. Samson is standing in front of a badly damaged car. “Bloody hell, I’m screwed. Ah, whatever!” he says before the teaser cuts to black.

The sequence offers little in the way of conventional plot information, but it does establish the film’s tone. Rather than presenting its superhero as an imposing figure who has complete control over his abilities, Cosmic Samson appears to be leaning into the humour and awkwardness that can come with discovering extraordinary powers.

From the team behind Minnal Murali

Directed by Abhijith Joseph, best known for the investigative thriller John Luther, Cosmic Samson is written by the filmmaker along with Abhikersh Vasanth. The film also features Miya George, Anuraj OB, Alphonse Puthren and Althaf Salim, along with several new faces.

The project is being positioned as a fantasy-driven superhero origin story, placing it in the increasingly prominent space occupied by Malayalam films such as Minnal Murali and Lokah Chapter 1: Chandra. The teaser, however, suggests that Cosmic Samson could be taking a considerably more irreverent route with the genre.

The film also has an important connection to Minnal Murali behind the camera. Hollywood stunt director Vlad Rimburg, who choreographed the action in Basil Joseph’s superhero film, is handling the action sequences here as well. With the makers reportedly aiming to make the action one of the film’s attractions, his involvement adds another layer of anticipation.

Sibi Mathew Alex has composed the music, with Deepak D Menon serving as cinematographer and Chaman Chakko handling the editing. The film is produced by Sophia Paul under the Weekend Blockbusters banner, in association with Manuel Cruz Darwin’s D Group. Weekend Blockbusters, which previously backed Minnal Murali, is producing its 10th film with Cosmic Samson.

The film is currently expected to reach theatres in October 2026 and is planned for release in Malayalam along with Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Hindi versions.

For Sandeep Pradeep, Cosmic Samson arrives after a particularly strong run of films. The actor has earned attention for his performances in Falimy, Alappuzha Gymkhana, Padakkalam and Dinjith Ayyathan’s Eko.

With Curtain Raiser choosing humour over exposition, the makers have kept the mystery around Samson’s abilities largely intact. Whether he grows into the superhero suggested by the title or continues crashing into trouble remains to be seen. For now, the teaser’s message is simple: Cosmic Samson may be super, but he is clearly still figuring things out.
