The much-awaited trailer of Daayra unfolds on August 31, ahead of the film’s theatrical release on September 18, 2026. As the film inches closer to the big screen, National Award-winning filmmaker Meghna Gulzar put pen to paper and took us behind the frame, sharing a heart-touching note on the journey that brought her to Daayra.
At the heart of her note is an idea that has long informed her storytelling: that life rarely exists in absolutes. With Daayra, Meghna takes that exploration a step further, describing the film as one that “not only explores that grey… it invades it… it attempts to dismantle it.”
She began her note by writing, “I was born in Mumbai. Having lived here all my life, and having travelled extensively across India, I thought I knew most of the city and the country through my life’s journey so far. But the journey of Daayra took me to unseen and unvisited places. And that’s just the geography. Daayra took my creativity to areas I have never explored before. It took my social awareness to reaches I didn’t know I had.”
She also reflected on the duality at the heart of the film and the casting of Kareena Kapoor Khan and Prithviraj Sukumaran, whose characters represent two contrasting forces navigating the same complicated landscape.

Her note traced a journey shaped by the places she has been, the stories she has told and the questions that have stayed with her along the way, eventually leading her to Daayra. Moving between memory, filmmaking, experience and exploration, Meghna offers audiences a rare window into the filmmaker behind the story.
Inspired by true events, Daayra is directed by Meghna Gulzar and stars Kareena Kapoor Khan and Prithviraj Sukumaran in the lead roles. Written by Yash Keswani, Sima Agarwal and Meghna Gulzar, the film is produced by Junglee Pictures and Dr. Jayantilal Gada (Pen Studios) and distributed by Pen Marudhar.
