National Award winner Shekhar Kapur is set to revisit his iconic film Masoom with a fresh take titled Masoom: The Next Generation. The original film, which released 43 years ago, holds a special place in Indian cinema and continues to be regarded as a cult classic. The latest update on the much awaited film is that Academy Award winner AR Rahman has already begun work on the project.
Rahman will compose the music for the film and has already recorded three songs in Los Angeles. He will also co-produce the project alongside Shekhar Kapur.

Shekhar and Rahman’s association dates back to 2002, when they collaborated on the Bollywood style musical Bombay Dreams in London. The musical came into being after Shekhar introduced Andrew Lloyd Webber to Bollywood music, eventually bringing Rahman on board for the production.
Masoom: The Next Generation is a fresh take on Shekhar Kapur’s iconic drama. Like the original, the film will explore changing family dynamics, identity and relationships across generations.

About Masoom
Shekhar Kapur made his directorial debut with Masoom in 1983. The film starred Naseeruddin Shah as D.K. Malhotra and Shabana Azmi as his wife, Indu, alongside Jugal Hansraj as Rahul, D.K.’s young son from an extramarital relationship. Urmila Matondkar and Aradhana played the couple’s daughters, Pinky and Minni, while Supriya Pathak, Tanuja, Saeed Jaffrey and Satish Kaushik also featured in the film. It was produced by Chanda Dutt and Devi Dutt, with cinematography by Pravin Bhatt and music by R.D. Burman.
Set largely around the Malhotra family, Masoom begins when D.K. learns that he has a nine-year-old son, Rahul, whose mother has died. He brings the boy home, but Indu struggles to accept him because Rahul is a constant reminder of her husband’s infidelity. The story follows the changes this brings to the family, including Rahul’s growing bond with his half-sisters and D.K.’s attempts to find a place for him within the household. The film’s soundtrack included songs such as Tujhse Naraaz Nahin Zindagi, Do Naina Ek Kahani and Huzur Is Kadar Bhi Na Itar Ke Chaliye.
