Tom Cruise’s Days of Thunder is heading back to the big screen, with a sequel officially in the works. Cruise will reprise his role as NASCAR driver Cole Trickle, while Anne Hathaway is set to join him in the upcoming follow-up to the 1990 racing drama.
The announcement was made at a special event at Daytona International Speedway, where Cruise and Paramount Pictures confirmed the new film. Hathaway will reportedly play a team owner and engineer in the sequel.
Cruise also shared a video announcement on social media featuring The Devil Wears Prada star and teased the film’s release with the caption, “Days of Thunder. Summer 2028.”

Cruise will star in and produce the film alongside Jerry Bruckheimer and Tommy Harper. Jonathan Levine is set to direct, with Will Staples writing the screenplay.
The sequel will be filmed for IMAX and is expected to release in premium large formats, giving audiences the chance to experience the high-speed racing drama on the biggest screens.
The original Days of Thunder, released in 1990, starred Cruise as Cole Trickle, a talented but headstrong NASCAR driver who gets a shot at competing at the highest level. The film was directed by Tony Scott and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and Don Simpson.
For Cruise, the sequel adds another major theatrical project to a career that has spanned more than four decades. The three-time Oscar nominee is known for films including Risky Business, Jerry Maguire, Top Gun, Top Gun: Maverick and the Mission: Impossible franchise. He is also known for performing many of his own stunts and championing theatrical releases.
Hathaway, meanwhile, is an Academy Award-winning actor whose credits include Les Misérables, The Devil Wears Prada, The Dark Knight Rises, Interstellar and Ocean’s Eight. She recently returned as Andy Sachs in The Devil Wears Prada 2 and also reunited with Christopher Nolan for The Odyssey.
The Days of Thunder sequel will mark the first time Cruise and Hathaway share the screen, with the two stars set to bring the racing franchise back to theatres in June 2028.
