R Madhavan’s GDN is set for its digital premiere following its recent theatrical release. The biographical drama, directed by Krishnakumar Ramakumar, will begin streaming on September 4, Friday. The film will be available in Tamil, along with dubbed versions in Hindi, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada.
Announcing the digital premiere, Netflix shared a new poster for the film with the caption, “Oru manushan oda vaazhkai indha naatu oda varalaaru” (One man’s life is this place’s history).
GDN is based on the life of inventor and industrialist GD Naidu, whose pioneering work and inventive spirit earned him recognition as one of India’s notable innovators. The film follows Naidu’s journey as he pursues his ideas and attempts to bring his vision for technological progress to life, even as he faces resistance from powerful authorities determined to stand in his way.
Madhavan plays the titular character in the film, with the story focusing on Naidu’s determination to continue pursuing his ambitions despite the considerable opposition he encounters. The cast also includes Sathyaraj, Jayaram, Thambi Ramaiah, Priyamani and Dushara Vijayan in prominent roles.
The Story Of An Unconventional Innovator
Through GDN, Ramakumar explores the life of a man whose ideas often placed him at odds with the establishment. The film looks at Naidu’s efforts to innovate and create in an era when technological advancement was not always encouraged, while also examining the hurdles he faced from those who sought to limit his ambitions.
The film also marks another production collaboration between Madhavan and his wife Sarita, who have backed the project under their Tricolour Films banner. Varghese Moolan and Vijay Moolan of Varghese Moolans Pictures have also produced the film. The two production houses previously collaborated on Rocketry: The Nambi Effect, the 2022 biographical drama based on the life of aerospace scientist Nambi Narayanan.
Rocketry saw Madhavan take on multiple responsibilities, with the actor serving as its lead, director and one of its producers. The film went on to receive considerable attention for bringing Narayanan’s story to the big screen.
GDN arrived in cinemas on August 7, alongside Arun Matheswaran’s DC, which stars Lokesh Kanagaraj and Wamiqa Gabbi in the lead roles. However, the Madhavan-led film failed to make the expected impact at the box office. According to the latest available figures from Sacnilk, GDN has recorded a worldwide gross of Rs 6.32 crore.
The film’s digital release now gives it an opportunity to find a larger audience beyond its theatrical run. Its availability in four dubbed languages could also help the story travel to viewers across different regions.
For Madhavan, GDN continues his association with biographical stories centred on extraordinary Indian personalities. Following the journey of Nambi Narayanan in Rocketry, the actor has now stepped into the shoes of another real-life figure whose contributions have remained relatively unfamiliar to a wider audience.
With its digital premiere, GDN could potentially introduce more viewers to GD Naidu’s remarkable life, his inventions and his enduring belief in pushing the boundaries of what was possible.
